Ashford Borough welcomed Herne Bay to the Ridge on a windy but pleasant Sunday lunchtime and neither disappointed as the match like the weather brought a smile to everyone's face. Borough suggested once again that they are turning the corner combining their slick passing game now with a physical presence that really tells the opposition that they are in for a game. Indeed, the greens really took the match to the blues in the first period with Liam Fletcher and Matt Kirby both going close supported well by Archie Irvine and Tom Valentine. Isaac Carney's free kick just before the break caused panic in the visiting ranks but they cleared their lines just before Steven Flack could turn the ball in. Either side of half time, the hosts had two strong penalty appeals turned down and it was in to the second half that the strong and technically adept Bay really started to show why they are leading the pack in this division. Despite this, they were unable to break through the resolute home back four of Ben Elvin, Owen Webb and the outstanding pairing of Ed 'The Stopper' Fowler and Jordan Haylett. Behind them, stand in keeper Adam Wernham stood largely untroubled and so it was to the other end where Harry Field ran for his life and Borough created another excellent chance. Carney took another free kick 20 yards from goal and curled his effort over the wall only to see it crash down from the underside of the bar and rushed away again to safety. It's not often that a scoreless draw sends you home happy, but this really was a pleasure to watch and both sides, their coaches, parents and the referee deserve great credit for making this happen - well done everyone!!
